Birthdays

Many children like to celebrate their birthday at school.  We count the birthdays in each month and compare the months as we learn more about the calendar. Please understand that we cannot have snacks for our celebrations due to allergies.  If lieu of food, please bring in your child's favorite book to read to the class.  Once the children finish eating their snack, we will sing Happy Birthday, then join together on the rug to listen to you read the book to the class.  Additionally, please understand that we do not have the birthday person bring in treats for each child.

Please contact me in advance of your child's birthday so that we can arrange a date and time that is convenient for you.

Homework:

The purpose of homework in first grade is to review and practice skills taught in the classroom. Children will not need to spend a great deal of time at home completing these assignments.

Math: Math homework will be sent home each day after the lesson has been completed.  Please return the homework the day after it is assigned.

Sight Words: Each week your child will bring home four sight words printed on oak tag paper. These sight words are taken from our Fundations phonics program. The goal is for your child to recognize, read and spell the words correctly. We will practice these words in school as well. The words become more challenging as the year progresses and by June there will be over 100 words. Your child will need to know how to read and spell these words for second grade. Reading and spelling these sight words should eventually become automatic for the students. The key is to practice, practice, and practice!

Reading and sight word practice: A reading log and sight word practice worksheet will be sent home on Mondays and both are due on Friday. Please read to or have your child read to you 10 to 15 minutes each day.

There will be a few take home projects during the school year. I will send more specific information about these projects at the appropriate time.

If you have any questions about homework assignments, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks for your support at home!

Notes From Home

Please be sure your child has a home/school two-pocket folder for papers and notes going to and from school.  If your child has any different after school plans, please send in a note for that day with the details. This folder will be traveling with your child on a daily basis.
