These Weeks We . . .                                               November 7-18, 2016

  • ·      learned 5 new letters Ll, Hh, Kk, Jj and Pp – practiced their sound and writing them
  • ·      read several books about Veteran’s Day to learn why it is a special day
  • ·      started to learn about the 1st Thanksgiving and are busy working on a book about it; learned a song about the difficult trip the pilgrims had crossing to the new land. We sang about it in our “Sail, Sail” song; talked about Squanto and the Wampanoag tribe and how they helped the pilgrims survive in the new world; learned a song about the Wampanoag’s, ASK ME to sing them for you
  • ·      read and have our own copy of books “Kittens” and “Veteran’s Day”
  • ·      had Open Circle we talked about giving compliments, a little smile for the heart
  • ·      heard some stories from a great South African storyteller, Valerie Tutson, Thank you TPA
  • ·      in math we finished Chapter 3 where we represented (in a 10 frame) counted and wrote numbers 6-9 and started Chapter 4 focusing on the number 10 and how it fills up a 10 frame and different number pairs we can use to compose a number 10 and the order of numbers
  • ·      added many new word wall words “you”, “to”, “dad”, “good”, “love”, “mom”, “stop”, “yes”, and “no” – WOW!
  • ·      in Reading Workshop we became “Super Readers”, practiced “pointing power.” Each word gets one tap and we designed our own pointers to use for tapping. ASK ME what Mrs. O’Shea wears during Readers Workshop
  • ·      had science and talked and illustrated how trees look in the fall and what drops from them and food from trees
  • ·      used IPADS in the classroom if we were “Fast Finishers” or had free time during the day, ASK ME what games we play on them

* When shopping for winter coats, boots, etc. please try to have   things that your child can independently take on and off, zip and       button, etc. they hate spending all recess getting ready for recess.       Also please label all your children’s clothes – Thank you

These Weeks We . . .

  • ·      were introduced to 2 letters, Ee and Uu. We practiced their sound and how to write them – we have now met all the vowels
  • ·      added new words to our word wall “can”, “the”, “go” and “will” after reading the books “Who Do You See?”, and “Trick or Treat”, I put my copy into my reading bin
  • ·      worked hard on learning the meaning of numbers 0 to 9, we practiced making sets, writing them, 3 ways to represent them with objects, the number itself and the number word
  • ·      during Reading Workshop we continued to learn and practice strategies to read our old favorite storybooks and finished Unit 1 with a parade to the Main Office in our special crowns
  • ·      in science we continued learning about trees, discussed the shapes of trees and how some have similar shapes
  • ·      had Open Circle and talked about the “good school listening look” and using “Non-verbal Signals”, we also had the 5th Grade come over to visit and talk about how to be a good friend, ASK ME who read me a book
  • ·      learned many new Halloween songs - I’m Orange and Round, They’ll Be Coming to our Doors on Halloween, Ghost and Goblins, ASK ME to teach you some. We heard many great Halloween stories, too.
  • ·      had a great Halloween parade and party. Thank you to all who sent in things for our goodie bags they were a hit and especially Mrs. Martin and Mrs. McKillop for all your work organizing things
  • ·      at Writer’s Workshop we continued working on our stories stretching words out to hear their sounds, using our word wall words in sentences and words we can find in the classroom. We labeled the classroom and drew a picture of our family and labeled each member, it is hanging in the hall with our other family picture our “School Family” hope you saw it
  • ·      made Halloween ghosts to trick or treat to our haunted house in the hallway

 

It was great to see all of you at conferences and discuss how your child is doing. For 42 days in Kindergarten and being 5/6 years old they are doing amazing things, we should all be very proud of them. Thank you for your support.

These Weeks We . . .

  • ·      were introduced to 2 letters, Ss and Dd. We practiced their sound and how to write them
  • ·      during Reading Workshop we continued to learn and practice strategies to read our old favorite storybooks and took home a book from Mrs. O’Shea to turn into our “favorite storybook”, how are we doing on that and we now have our own book bins to read from
  • ·      in science we continued learning about trees, talked about the parts of trees and what work they do for the tree, in our science journal we labeled the parts of a tree
  • ·      used magnetic boards and letter tiles to practice our sounds and put our letters into alphabetical order
  • ·      Lt. Findelin with the Norfolk Fire Department came and spoke with us about fire safety and we made a class Fire Safety book. He said we should plan a meeting spot in case of an emergency.
  • ·      used the word wall words “I” and “like” and the word book to make two sentences and then glued on the covers of books we have read and liked
  • ·      in Art Mr. Reilly helped us in learning to draw people
  • ·      we drew an entry into our journal on something we did over the weekend, the were many about the Haunted Train Ride
  • ·      during Writer’s Workshop we continued on our stories or started new one, “When we are done we have just begun.” Talked about using our sounds to spell words and asking ourselves questions to think of more to add to our stories. We also tried writing with a partner, telling them our story and having them give us ideas to make it better.
  • ·      read the book “Leaves” and added “are” to our word wall, we put our copy in our book bins
  • ·      labeled the cycle of a pumpkin life, we had a pumpkin with a vine and a blossom from our Ward’s Berry Farm trip to remind us
  • ·      Mrs. Kelley read us the story Spookley the Square Pumpkin, ASK ME what it was about

These Weeks We . . .          

  • ·      were introduced to 4 letters Cc, Aa, Oo and Gg. We practiced their sound and how to write them, ASK ME why Oo and Aa are a special letter and on a pink card

·      added 2 new words to our word wall “can” and “like” after reading the books Farm Animals and Lunch, I brought home my own copy of them - let’s read them together

·      talked about friends and friendships, read many stories about friends, and made a “My Friends” class book, ASK ME whose picture I put in it

  • ·      Officer Plympton came and talked about bus safety and we made a class “Bus Safety” book ASK ME what my rule was

·      at Writer’s Workshop we drew a self portrait for September doing something at school, ASK ME what I drew. We continued working on our own stories

·      saw a quick video on Johnny Appleseed and Christopher Columbus and read books about them

·      used magnetic boards to find the sounds we learned

  • ·      worked hard on learning the meaning of numbers 0 to 5, we practiced making sets, writing them, 3 ways to represent them with objects, the number itself and the word. Now we are comparing number sets using words: same, greater than, fewer and less than
  • ·      we started our school wide the “Eyes and Hi’s” program on National Smile Day, danced into school to the song “Happy”
  • ·      started our science unit on Trees and Weather, we went out to observe the trees in our schoolyard then illustrated what we saw in our science notebook
  • ·      Had fun at Reader’s Workshop discovering “wow” pages in our “learn about the world” books and shared them with our partners. Went back to reread and add “a pinch of me” to the story, ASK ME who I read to and who is my partner
  • ·      Had so much fun at our Open House (thanks for coming) and on our field trip to Ward’s Berry Farm, ASK ME what the name of the farmer was
  • ·      had our first AIMM’s (Art, Integrated Technology, Music and Movement) meeting, all the kindergartener’s were together with our “Special” teachers learning and having fun, ASK ME how it was and who was the best dancer

These Weeks We . . .              

·      were introduced to 7 letters, Bb, Ff, Tt, Ii, Uu, Mm, and Nn. We practiced their sound and how to write them, we talked about vowels and why they are special letters

·      made a Chicka, Chicka, Name, Name tree to make a Chicka, Chicka, Name, Name quilt in the hallway, you can see it at Open House

·      read the book “School” and “I Am” added “I”, “school”, “am” and “see” to our word wall, ASK ME to read my copy I brought home to you and let’s find a special place to keep all my books I bring home

·      used magnetic boards to find the sounds we learned and practiced putting our letters in ABC order

·      worked hard on learning the meaning of numbers 0 to 5, we practiced making sets, writing them, 3 ways to represent them with objects, the number itself and the word     

·      talked about the seasons and welcomed fall on Thursday

·      started Reader’s Workshop – we sing a special gathering song, then go to the rug for a mini-lesson where we learn something new to help us with learning to read – did you know, “We are readers!”. We practiced reading on our own “private” reading and reading with a partner. We practiced with “learning about the world” books. We discovered “wow” pages in these books and shared them with a partner, we learned you read starting with the cover and go to the next page, then the next till the end and we learned about rereading our books to discover more interesting information.

·      Heard the story of Chrysanthemum and illustrated what made us feel “wilted” and when we feel “bloomed”, ASK ME what made Chrysanthemum feel wilted and bloomed, and we compared how many letters in our name, her name and a friend’s name. Check it out in the hallway when you come to Open House

 These Weeks We . . .

  • learned some new chants - “Good Morning to . . .”, “Welcome Children”,  “It’s Kindergarten a Wonderful Place To Be”
  •  learned to be a 5 star listener on the rug with many of our daily routines; calendar, weather graph, “How many days has school been open” count and colored a kid to look like me - true life color hair and eyes studied 3 letters Bb, Ff and Tt – practiced their sounds and writing them
  •  learned lots of new things about our school and took a tour of our school
  •  had our 1st all school fire drill while we were at Library, we did a great job
  •  had Open Circle and played a fun game getting to know each others name
  • had computer and met Mr. Pizzi, we learned many rules about using our computers and played the “Bees and Honey” game
  •  met Mrs. Carney in Library and took out a book, don’t forget to bring it back next Wednesday
  • we had fun with Mr. D two times at Physical Education
  •  in math we made our own “Number Story” book and played the “Bus Stop” game
  • did our 1st entry into our journal, we drew something we did at school, ASK ME what I chose

These Weeks We . . .                         April 25 - May 6, 2016

·      returned from vacation and wrote about and illustrated in our journals about something fun we did over vacation

·      celebrated our Earth throughout the week. We learned about ways we could make a difference in taking care of our earth, ASK ME what we can do at home

·      had a “trash-free” snack – we did great, very, very little trash, a big difference from the day before

·      went to see “Johnny the K” who sang about taking care of the Earth and respect, he wore many different hats, ASK ME which was my favorite, thank you P.T.A.

·      met with our Guided Reading groups, boy are we becoming great readers!

·      Our whole class went down to the office and read a poem over the loud speaker, ASK ME which poem we read

·      finished poetry month (April) with a wonderful “Poetry Party”, thank you to Mrs. Sarkar and Mrs. O’Shea for organizing all the goodies and to all the Moms that sent things in, we hope you enjoyed the party!

·      had “Reader’s Workshop” where we became “Avid Non-Fiction” readers, ASK ME what topic my reading club focused on – insects, animals, beach, people

·      learned what makes something a living thing or non-living - ASK ME?

·      practiced sentence dictation and tapping CVC words on the magnetic boards and dry erase boards

·      worked hard on a Mother’s Day gift, I hope you love it!

·      discussed and labeled the parts of plants and what they need to live and grow

·      had jump roping expert Mark Rothstein come to school and teach us how to jump rope and showed us some awesome tricks, thank you P.T.A.

·      in science we discussed paper, and recycled old paper into new paper

·      in math we have been learning about subtraction and finding different addends in our subtraction number sentences

These Weeks We . . .

·      Welcomed Spring with a book and a new song and a 2 hour delay because of snow

·      Played many math games with the help of some great moms – Domino Drive-In, Memory with dominoes, 10 Frame Bump and Die Plus 1

·      Had Reader’s Workshop where we continued becoming “Avid Readers”; we discussed using just right words to describe our characters feelings; played “Guess my Feeling”; worked on mastering our “Super Powers;” had reading play dates; and practiced playing pretend with our stories

·      Had Writer’s Workshop where we continue writing our “How to . . .” books

·      Learned a lot about rainbows, heard some great books about rainbows and some new songs

·      Heard to stories Chameleon Colors; A Color of His Own; and Rex then colored a chameleon, choose which book we liked best and why, ASK ME about the one I chose

·      In math we are doing algebra – finding the missing addend and decomposing numbers to 10, discovering different ways to make them

·      Heard the story of rainbow fish and made one of our own, ASK ME what rainbow fish had that every other fish wanted

·      We made some big rainbows with tissue paper for our classroom windows

·      In science we have been studying different kinds of wood, we labeled things in our classroom that are made of wood and went on a wood hunt to find a matching kind of wood we had. We also discussed where wood comes from and how it is made into particleboard and plywood.

·      During Open Circle we discussed bullying and important words like ally, target and bystander then we had a revisit from our 5th grade friends. They come in the fall to talk about being a friend with us; today they came and talked about bullying with us. They read us a book and we made a banner to hang in the hallway.

     * Half days next Tuesday and Thursday, I look forward to seeing at conference time

     * End of day pick ups next week will be in the Gym due to the book fair inn the Library. Our class will be going to the book fair on Tuesday, 9:40-10:05 if you want to go with your child.

These Weeks We . . .                           March 7 – 18, 2016

·      saw the Pumpernickel Puppets and wrote in our journal about it – thank you TPA for the presentation

·      practiced hearing and filling in the middle vowel sound for CVC words

·      graphed cubes and turned them into an addition sentence

·      used our magnetic alphabet boards to spell CVC words, and had a spelling bee for our Word Wall Words on our dry erase boards

·      at Writer’s Workshop we are working on “How to” books, ASK ME what mine is about

·      finished adding words to our word wall, attached is a list of all our words, ASK ME to read them to you

·      had reading group with Mrs. O’Shea and Independent Reading, ASK ME what I am reading about, we added “extra strength” power to our reading super powers and talked about what it looks like and is to be an “avid” reader as opposed to a “blah” reader

·      in math we finished Chapter 12 and did great on our Chapter test which was about sorting and displaying the information in graph form

·      started Chapter 5 in math, we will learn how to show, and act out addition

·      sounded out CVC words and wrote them in shamrocks

·      had a visit from Walpole Dental who talked to us about taking good care of our teeth, and eating healthy snacks and sent us home with a bag of treats

·      in science we discussed what our class tree looks like in the winter then drew and wrote about it in our science journal

·      celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, heard the story Liam the Leprechaun then made our own leprechaun face

* Thursday, March 31st is Math Night at Freeman Kennedy, 6-7:00 math games, 7-7:30 make your own sundae

* Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on April 5th (afternoon) and April 7th (evening), those are both ½ days and we schedule them the same time as your fall conference

* Wednesday, May 4th, 1:45-2:30 our class will be having a Poetry Party and you are invited

* Last day of kindergarten will be Tuesday, June 14th it will be a full day; our Kindergarten Memory Show will be on Friday, June 10th, at 9:30.

These Weeks We . . .                    February 22 – March 4, 2016

·      illustrated in our journals something we did over vacation and wrote about it, ASK ME what I wrote about

·      had a visit from Ms. Atomic A from Hi Tech Hi Touch (thank you PTO) who taught us about weather then we wrote and illustrated about it in our Science Journal

·      received our own copy of the book “We Are Painting” read and colored it, ASK ME to read it to you

·      practiced lots of rhyming with different activities

·      practiced hearing and filling in the middle vowel sound for CVC words

·      celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with many fun activities

·      read many of his fun and silly rhyming books

·      learned a new “Good Morning” song in his honor

·      the whole school “Read Their Socks Off” in the hallway on Wednesday, Dr. Seuss’s birthday - ASK ME who was dressed like Cat in the Hat

·      made a “Cat in the Hat” T.L.C.

·      used our magnetic alphabet boards to spell CVC words, and had a spelling bee for our Word Wall Words on our dry erase boards

·      at Writer’s Workshop we started “How to” stories, ASK ME what my story is about

·      tapped to spell and sound out many CVC words

·      in math we are working on Chapter 12 which is about sorting and displaying the information in graph form

·      at Open Circle we talked about teasing and how it is a double “D” behavior and what we should do if we are teased or see someone being teased

·      practiced our “math facts” addition facts to 5

·      had reading groups with Mrs. O’Shea, started bringing home book bags so we can practice reading everyday at home too!
